View Date:2025-01-10 09:53:41
It's going to be an all-European final!
England will play Spain on Sunday at 6 a.m. ET, with both teams looking for their first World Cup title. It'll be a rematch of last year's European championship quarterfinal, which England won 2-1. The Three Lionesses went on to win the title, giving England its first major title since the men won the World Cup in 1966.
This is the first all-European final since 2003, when Germany beat Sweden to win its first title.
While England's win over Australia in Tuesday's semifinal spoiled what has been an epic party for the host nation, The Matildas still have a chance to win their first medal at the World Cup. They will play Sweden in the third-place game at 4 a.m. ET Saturday.

How Spain made it to the World Cup final
Captain Olga Carmona scored in the 89th minute to send Spain to a 2-1 win and its first World Cup final appearance.
Carmona's goal capped a frenetic finish to the game, with all three goals coming in an eight-minute span. Salma Paralluelo put La Roja in the lead in the 81st, only to have Rebecka Blomqvist equalize in the 88th. But with the game appearing to be headed to overtime, Carmona scored off a corner kick, settling the ball with her first touch before firing it into the net.
Spain is playing for the title in only its third World Cup appearance. It went out in the group stage in 2015 and lost to the U.S. women in the round of 16 in 2019.

The Three Lionesses took an early lead against Australia, only to have Matildas star Sam Kerr equalized from distance in the 63rd minute with what could be the goal of the tournament so far. But Kerr missed two fantastic chances while England was ruthless with its opportunities.
